Dead man's trash: David Klein

You can see his work in the Moma, on TWA advertisments from the late 60s/early 70s, and on this post...
I was in Brooklyn Heights with my friend, Chelsea Kane, and found some fabulous trash from the artist. His wife had probably done some cleaning after his death and I scooped it up with my handy-dandy granny cart. These are just some of the smaller pictures I found:

Sent to a Corner for Time-Out: Third-Grade Attempt to Write 100 Word Apology:

12/5/08

A couple of responses for the day:

Hey,
I been using this spot off and on for the past 3 months. It's great. Time Hotel in Manhattan - (49th between 8th and Broadway) the bar/lounge on the on the 2nd floor. Men's bathroom, 2nd stall.

Hello, I only know of 1 public place. It is in a Bar in Mt Vernon, which is in Westchester NY on Gramatan Ave. It is between the Mens and Womans room. The Mens room has duck-tape over it which u just pull back, the Womans room also has duck-tape but is also under the toilet paper roll if its pulled down. Strangers to the bar think the wall just needs repair but the locals as myself have been having fun there for years.

Just got into t-neck tonight... I'm doing a project focused on my best friend from high school, Lisa Greenberg. She went to school in Ridgefield Park and moved onto Tenafly...enough said. She is a strong woman. She is a resilient child.

As a matter of fact, ALL of my closest friends are resilient children.

Tomorrow I am either:
a) going to Phili with Greenberg
b) going to Newark where my friend, Ben Powers, lives for $300/mth with 12 other people(??!!) and make really really really tall bikes,
c) feeding my airplants and making plans for when I go to Mississippi on Christmas

Polish Parade 5th Ave ST. Patricks

I was in the Polish Parade on 5th avenue and had a crazy experience...with a Polish Cardinal in a pink sash!!! I made EYE to EYE contact with one while my group was being introduced to NYC........and the best part about it all is that I had become so excited that I got AIR during this glorious CONNECTION!

This guy supports the parade EVERY YEAR! What a trooper!

Polish Boy Scouts

14th n 6th ave Tunnel

This is a picture of a man who many of us may recognize.

I used to live off the L and every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday I would see him standing in the same spot singing classic Beatles' songs with a glorious smile and a bobbing head.

The other day I was hanging out on my block and Mr. Zach Heru himself walked by and we talked for a while. He gave me one of his booklets. On the back of it reads: "The experience you are about to undertake will be like that of the uplifting of the Cataract from the eyes of the Spiritually blind, and allowing them for the first time to see the beautiful sights of life that once before weren't tangible to the; now they'll be able to see life as it was meant to be seen and known!... So again, just relax and enjoy the Dream that life really is, and upon your awakening , say "Thank you Dear Black Cosmic Spiritual Mother, for this wonderful Dream that you have bestowed upon me." Good Night and Good Morning."

Every paragraph inside the booklet ends with an exclamation point. It's pretty... amazing.

The Panic in Needle Park (1971) is a wonderful film, staring Al Pacino, whose screenplay was written by Joan Didion . My father told me about Sherman Park's former reputation in the 1970s and referred to it as "Needle Park" (hint hint), so when I saw the title of the film, I knew I HAD to see it. Just to see what New York USED to look like was fascinating in itself...

What an interesting man...

I would like to share a couple pictures that are very meaningful to me. The one above in a word represents the "essence of my.....................BEING" and reminds me of the Electra complex I suffer. Why does my father collect banana Chiquita stickers? I don't know. Why don't any of our mugs have handles? Don't ask me??! It's just the way it is at the Golde's....

What is this picture about? WELL, starting when I was fourteen years old, every mfing day I had to take this horrible train to the 125th st stop, wait for my delusional father to pick me up while a woman with a cheetah coat and pleather pants nodded off at the expense of MY SHOULDER at 6 o'clock in the morning. Right before I left the station, I would have to go through these doors, which would basically sum up my entire experience in a word every single DAY.

Press your face against the subway's window. Front car or back car gives you the most variety of views. Do this with a good friend and you will discover some very interesting places you might have overlooked. Take the 1 train and you can see clearly what is left of the 91st st. subway station. I need to go to the 32nd st overpass before its destroyed in the next few months... any takers?

Speaking of subway windows, this guy who makes crowns and dances around union square (above) gave me a good tip: if I ever need to instantly laminate something, just pry off the subway window plastic and place whatever I want preserved on the sticky side of the plastic, fold in half so that the sticky side sticks together and PRESTO badabing you spare yourself from going to Kinkos= HELL??! I've bled profusly at Kinko's and it took one of five workers TEN minutes to get me a band-aid. Assholes made me suck on my own blood... ANYWAY, I was hanging out with Ishmail one day and met a kid at union who said that he commuted on the same bus as this crown guy all the way from the BRONX. He doesn't pull his shinanagins up there... He supposedly acts like a Joe Smoe with a crown on his head made from plastic bags, cans, and fake flowers and a moo-moo made out of staped together pieces of rejected Garment District silk.
I opened up a bedsheet that was stuffed in a plastic bag in my room today. Inside I found half a head's worth of an ACTUAL AFRO. Why is this in my house???!!

I need to meet Dr. Zizmor

the late 1970s: two fries too short of a happy meal

what does one little boy, six disco asparagii, two moo-moo wearers, and a real mccoy of a fake cowboy make?? BABIES!! all i can say is thank GOD i was born in generation scrunchie....that's REAL progress!

here are some novelty outfits from the sears 1975-9 catologues i that i think will catch on to the watered down downtown scene. i smell creative despiration in the air....

bad brains is homophobic ekk.

It's always a shame when you find out that the bands/programs/people you used to like were either classist, sexist, homophobic, racist, etc.
The following list is a collection of curiosities I've had over the past week:

  • Bubbles, Michael Jackson's chimpanzee - Why!?? HOW!?
  • Zebras and Flamingos - do some research on this
  • C.H.U.D - Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller - Chamber st. Subway
  • NYC beaches in November - Howard Beach (a train) and Rocaway (go fishing with Fisherman Bob ASAP!!)
  • Document the switch of name from "Triboro Bridge" to Robert F. Kennedy Bridge on November 19th.
  • Macy's Balloon Test in Flushing (Smurf Balloon)
  • Next time the Westboro Baptist Church (http://www.godhatesfags.com/) protests in NY, I've got to take pictures. These people are nasty...
  • Jacques Cousteau -- go to Museum of T&B and watch some of his shows
  • Major McCheese?? WHO is he?
  • Impersonator's of NYC (Al Pacino)
  • Foley Square - Storyboard by NPR - get an interview?
  • Plato's Retreat on 74th and West End ave - ask fellow uwsiders about their experience

Phew, that felt good. These are two wonderful songs...

I went to visit carl schmiel's warehouse on 36th st on wednesday to say hi and document his fortress of curiosities. crystals, wooden animals, new york city relics, hotel numbers, chains of every sort dangling in a matted mess from metal shelves gone askew... i simply LOVE this place! stacks and stacks of boxes are bursting of goodies.. oh, i could spend DAYS there! anyhow, carl won't be in the city forever. it is really up to generation x y and z to continue the nyc legacy that those carl schmiels have created for us new yorkers... here are some pictures i look:
